The Paulinerkloster Grünwald, located in the Grünwald district of the municipality of Lenzkirch in the Black Forest, was once a small but historically significant monastery. It was characterized by its foundation from a hermitage and played a role in regional church history.
History+
The origins of the Paulinerkloster Grünwald date back to 1360, when it emerged from a hermitage. Its establishment was supported by donations from St. Blasien Monastery and the knights of Blumegg and Wolfurt. The convent was small and, according to an agreement with St. Blasien, was not allowed to house more than ten monks, though actual occupancy often ranged from two to three monks. Around 1430, the village of Kappel was assigned to the monastery as a parish. In 1488, the Fürstenberg family assumed control over the monastery as it fell within their territory. After destruction during the Thirty Years' War, the complex was rebuilt around 1670, and the church received a relic of Saint Lucius in 1675, turning it into a pilgrimage site. A copy of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa was also venerated here. The church was rebuilt in 1733. In 1803, the monastery was finally dissolved. A fire in 1880 destroyed both the church and the monastery, with only the church being rebuilt on its old foundations by the Princes of Fürstenberg.
