Paulus-Schlößchen (Markneukirchen)

The historic building, now home to the Musical Instrument Museum, boasts a rich and varied history. Originally constructed in the late 18th century, it has undergone several transformations and played different roles before becoming the cultural institution it is today.

The building was erected in 1784 by Johann Adam Mönnig. Its initial purpose and subsequent early owners are not extensively documented, but it is known that in 1815, it was acquired by Christian Gottfried Glier, an instrument maker. This acquisition marks an early connection of the building to the craft of instrument making, a theme that would re-emerge much later in its history.

The 20th century brought significant challenges and changes for the building. In 1936, an application for its demolition was filed. Fortunately, this application was rejected, and the building was subsequently placed under monument protection, recognizing its historical and architectural value. This decision was crucial for its survival.

Just two years later, in 1938, the building was subjected to a compulsory auction and acquired by the city of Markneukirchen. Following its acquisition, the city undertook a comprehensive renovation of the building, ensuring its structural integrity and preserving its historical character.

Since 1942, the building has served as the home of the Musical Instrument Museum. This establishment has cemented its place as a significant cultural landmark, showcasing the rich tradition of musical instrument craftsmanship in the region and beyond.
