Pembroke Castle
Pembroke Castle is an impressive castle complex in Wales, picturesquely situated on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by water on three sides. This 12th-century Norman fortress bears witness to a long and eventful history and is considered an outstanding example of medieval architecture.
History+
The origins of the site date back to 1093, when Arnulf de Montgomery erected an initial fortification here. The castle largely acquired its current form through William Marshall, son-in-law of Richard de Clare, who undertook extensive reconstruction work in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The mighty main tower, with its unusual stone dome, still stands 20 meters high today and once offered a strategically important view over Milford Haven. Pembroke Castle played a significant role in history: Henry II used it in 1172 as a base for his campaigns in Ireland, and in 1457, the future King Henry VII was born here. During the English Civil War, the castle changed hands multiple times and was surrendered in 1648 after a siege by Oliver Cromwell's forces.
