Petrini Church

The church was built in 1151 and 1152 at the behest of Bishop Vicelin. He had temporarily moved the bishop's seat of the Diocese of Oldenburg, which had been vacant for over 80 years, from Oldenburg to Bosau, as the region around Oldenburg was still insecure. Vicelin consecrated the church shortly before his death. Under his successor Bishop Gerold, the bishop's seat was moved to Lübeck in 1160. The chronicler and priest Helmold of Bosau wrote his Chronica Slavorum here between 1167 and 1172. During the Thirty Years' War, the church's original round tower was destroyed in 1627 and later rebuilt in an almost square shape.
