History+

The origins of Petworth House date back to the 13th century when it was owned by the Percy family. In 1682, the estate passed to Charles Seymour, the Duke of Somerset, through marriage. Under his patronage, the current mansion was built between 1688 and 1696, incorporating older structural elements. Another marriage in 1750 brought the property to the Wyndham family, whose head held the title Earl of Egremont. The 3rd Earl of Egremont, a patron of the painter William Turner, provided the artist with his own studio in the house. Turner created numerous oil paintings and watercolors here between 1827 and 1837.
