In Groß-Umstadt, in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of Hesse, is the Pfälzer Schloss, a noble residence that emerged from a former moated castle. It once served as an administrative seat for the Electoral Palatinate and is now a center for culture and gatherings.

History+

The origins of the Pfälzer Schloss date back to a Fulda moated castle, likely a fief of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. In 1390, Fulda sold the lordship to the Electoral Palatinate. From 1427, the Electoral Palatinate and the County of Hanau jointly governed Umstadt. In the mid-15th century, the Palatine Counts began developing the area into an administrative and official seat.
