In Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, the Palatine Castle, together with the Court Church and the Reitstadel, forms the center of the castle quarter in the old town. It now serves as a venue for cultural events and a restaurant.

History+

At the site of the current castle, there were likely at least three predecessor buildings. A first castle was probably built between 1200 and 1250 as the official and residential seat for the Neumarkt reeves. After its destruction by fire in 1298, a successor building was erected. In 1410, after the death of Ruprecht III., Johann von Pfalz-Neumarkt received the Upper Palatinate and moved his seat of government to Neumarkt. He had a new castle built, similar to the current structure, and expanded the Marienkapelle into the Court Church. His son Christoph became King of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, so a governor resided in Neumarkt. Later, Otto II.
