St. Oswald Church

The church's origins date back to the 13th century, when a Romanesque predecessor was built on the Vogelbichl. Construction of the current late Gothic church began in 1470 under Emperor Frederick III and was significantly influenced by the Admont master builders. A devastating city fire in 1496, which also affected the church under construction, delayed its completion. After further construction phases, including the erection of the vault and its decoration, the church was finally consecrated on July 2, 1512. In the 16th century, Eisenerz became a center of Protestantism, and the church served as a sacred monument of this faith. From 1519, Protestantism spread in Styria, and Eisenerz publicly declared its adherence to the Augsburg Confession in 1572. The looming Turkish invasions led to the expansion of the defensive complex from 1482, which was later used as a refuge during the Counter-Reformation around 1599. In the 18th century, the church underwent a Baroque transformation, receiving an onion dome and new interior furnishings. At the end of the 19th century, the church was re-Gothicized during a comprehensive renovation, replacing Baroque elements with Neo-Gothic ones. Since 2004, the entire complex has been gradually renovated.

The Parish Church of St. Oswald is located in Eisenerz, in the district of Leoben in Styria, Austria, at an altitude of approximately 722 meters above sea level. It is built on a northern spur of the Erzberg, known as the Vogelbichl, and is surrounded by a fortified enclosure.

The church can be visited and today presents itself as an impressive late Gothic fortified church. Visitors will find a well-preserved complex that bears witness to its eventful history.
