Vohburg Castle

The origins of the site date back to the early Bronze Age, with documented settlement traces from the La Tène and Roman periods. By the end of the 10th century, a fortified farm existed here. From 1040, the Counts of Rott-Vohburg resided here, followed by the Counts of Cham after 1081, and the Diepoldinger family from 1120, who expanded the castle into a stronghold. After the death of Berthold II in 1204, the Bavarian dukes took over the fortress and made it the center of the Vohburg district. The castle was rebuilt and extended. In 1246, the wedding of Konrad IV of Hohenstaufen to Elisabeth of Wittelsbach took place here.
