A historic city gate that was part of the ancient Aurelian Walls in Rome is the Porta Asinaria. It was once the only gate in Rome with four towers.

History+

The gate was originally built between 271 and 275 AD as part of the Aurelian Walls and served as the starting point of the Via Asinaria, which connected to the Via Appia and Via Ardeatina. Initially, it was a smaller, towerless structure, flanked by two square towers nearby. Under Emperor Honorius, it underwent an expansion: it received two semicircular towers, an inner gatehouse, a widened passage, and a gun chamber with five arched windows.
