In Scharnitz, Tyrol, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 1024 meters above sea level, lies the Porta Claudia-Leutascher Schanz, a historic fortress that once secured an important passage.
History+
The construction of the Porta Claudia began in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War, initiated by Claudia de’ Medici, Archduchess of Austria and sovereign of Tyrol, to fortify the passage from Bavaria to Tyrol. The complex was expanded in 1670. In 1805, during the Third Coalition War, French troops under Marshal Michel Ney besieged the Scharnitz and Leutasch passes. The Leutascher Schanz, part of the Porta Claudia, was captured by the French, who, aided by local guides, surprised the Austrian defenders, thus paving the way into the Inn Valley and Innsbruck.
