Porta Pinciana

The gate was built in 401 under Emperor Honorius as part of reinforcements to the Aurelian Wall. An existing small sally port was fortified; the right tower received a semicircular base, while an identical tower was newly built on the left side. The travertine cladding of the brick construction is still well preserved today. The complex was raised to three stories, but later, towards the end of the 19th century, it was restored to its original state, with medieval additions removed. Named after the Pincio Hill, the gate also bore the name Porta Salaria Vetus, as the Via Salaria once passed through it.
