Porta Praetoriana
The Porta Praetoriana was a gate of the fortified camp of the Praetorian Guard in Rome. Its remains were later integrated into the Aurelian Wall.
History+
This gate, originally part of the Praetorian Guard's camp, was incorporated into the Aurelian Wall between 271 and 273 AD, along with parts of the camp's northern and eastern fortifications. The Porta Praetoriana, which predated the Aurelian era, is distinguishable from the later Aurelian Wall by its specific brickwork technique. Although it was demolished and its passages closed in the early 4th century, its traces are still visible today. The gate was originally flanked by two towers.
