The first mention of a cathedral chapter in Brandenburg an der Havel dates to 948, when the Diocese of Brandenburg was founded. After its dissolution in 983, it was re-established in 1161 as the Premonstratensian Canons Regular Foundation of St. Gotthardt. Four years later, in 1165, the foundation moved to the northern half of Brandenburg. Its main tasks included conducting daily services and assisting the bishop in administering the diocese. Until 1506, the cathedral chapter belonged to the Premonstratensian Order, which entailed a communal life under monastic rule with shared property and celibacy. In 1507, the cathedral chapter was transformed into a secular institution. Following the introduction of the Reformation in 1544, it lost much of its property and powers but continued to exist as an Evangelical cathedral chapter. After its dissolution in 1809, it was re-established in 1823.

Today, the Cathedral Foundation is an Evangelical institution that organizes life and activities within the castle courtyard area in cooperation with the local church community. This includes the preservation of historical buildings, the cultivation of church music with annual summer concerts, as well as forestry with its own sawmill and the leasing of agricultural land. The Cathedral Foundation annually awards the Brandenburg Freedom Prize and collaborates with various cultural and ecclesiastical institutions, including the Cathedral Museum and the Cathedral Foundation Archive. Since 2023, the Cathedral Foundation has been led and managed by an executive board.
