Elsey Abbey

The former Premonstratensian Abbey of Elsey, a historic monastery, is located in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Situated at approximately 127 meters above sea level, the site boasts a long history, spanning from its foundation in the early 13th century to its secularization in the early 19th century.

History+

The first documented mention of Elsey Monastery dates back to 1223, with its foundation attributed to a donation by Countess Methildis of Holland. Initially, the monastic order affiliation was not clearly established, but in the second half of the 13th century, its affiliation with the Premonstratensian Order was confirmed. From the outset, the Holy Virgin Mary served as the patroness of the monastery. Leadership was initially held by a prioress, later by a provost who managed the monastery together with a prioress and the convent. The convent consisted of members of the lower nobility from the Counties of Mark and Limburg. In the late 15th century, the community transformed into a noble secular canonesses' collegiate foundation, led by an abbess. This development reflected an increasing secularization of lifestyle, with the foundation increasingly serving as a provision institution for noble daughters. The dissolution and secularization of the monastery occurred in 1812.
