Kloster Lauffen

Event venue, exhibitions

The former Premonstratensian convent of Lauffen, a historic women's monastery, is located in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg. Although only remnants of the original buildings remain, the convent church was rebuilt in the 20th century and now serves as an event venue.

History+

The founding of Lauffen Monastery is marked by various historical accounts. An early mention from 1003 suggests King Heinrich II's intention to establish a Benedictine convent, though its actual realization remains unclear. More certain is the existence of a Dominican convent in the 13th century, first documented around 1285. In the 14th century, sovereignty shifted to the Württembergers. From 1466, Premonstratensian nuns from Adelberg Monastery took over the site, receiving significant support from Count Ulrich V. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery was plundered and severely damaged. The Reformation under Duke Ulrich led to the gradual dissolution of the monastery from 1536, which was finally completed in 1553 under Duke Christoph of Württemberg. The secularized monastic property was subsequently administered as a monastic steward's office until 1807, with the buildings largely demolished over time.

Location+

The former monastery grounds are situated in Lauffen am Neckar, a town in the Heilbronn region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

On site+

Today, only remnants of the outer walls of the original monastery buildings survive. The convent church, abandoned in the 18th century and later demolished, was rebuilt in 1923 using original monastery stones. It is now used for events and exhibitions. The monastery courtyard also features a lapidarium with historical boundary stones and a memorial to the poet Hölderlin.
