Prämonstratenserstift Leitzkau

The abbey's foundation likely occurred after 1138, with its first canons coming from the Premonstratensian Abbey of Our Lady in Magdeburg. Initially located at St. Peter's Church in Leitzkau, the abbey was relocated to a nearby hill in 1155. There, Archbishop Wichmann of Magdeburg consecrated the new St. Mary's Church on September 7 of that year, in the presence of Margrave Albert the Bear and his family. Prior to 1150, the abbey had already dispatched nine canons to Brandenburg, where they founded the Premonstratensian Abbey at St. Gotthardt's Church. Despite a loss of significance after the election of Bishop Wilmar in 1161, who moved to Brandenburg in 1165, the convent retained the right to participate in episcopal elections and chose two anti-bishops in the 13th century. By the early 16th century, complaints arose regarding the neglect of the canons' way of life. In 1535, Bishop Matthias von Jagow requested the dissolution of the abbey, which at that time housed only five members. Between 1535 and 1537, the abbey was finally dissolved and passed into secular ownership. The monastery's patronage was Mary.

The Premonstratensian Abbey of Leitzkau is situated in the Jerichower Land in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was originally founded within the town of Leitzkau and later moved to a hill near the settlement.

Remains of the former St. Mary's Church, which was built on the hill in 1155, are still present today.
