Prämonstratenserstift St. Marien und St. Martin, Kaiserslautern, später Kollegiatstift

Permission for the construction of a Franciscan monastery in Kaiserslautern was granted in 1284 by King Rudolf of Habsburg. The monastic complex was built in 1290 directly on the city wall. Approximately ten years later, it was expanded with a Gothic church, now known as St. Martin's Church. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1538, the church was desacralized, and the city gained rights of use over the buildings. During the Reformation, introduced in Kaiserslautern between 1554 and 1556, the city converted to Calvinism. In 1634, following the victory of imperial troops, a Franciscan convent was re-established after the city had converted to Catholicism in 1628. A small stair tower was added on the east side in 1629. In 1652, the monastery was dissolved again, and the church was converted into a municipal armory, with the nave divided into two floors and windows bricked up. After 1666, the church served as a riding hall for the Duke of Simmern. French occupation troops returned the church to the Franciscans in 1688. Following the French Revolution, the monastery was dissolved once more. Since 1803, St. Martin's Church has served as a Catholic parish church. The former monastery buildings were demolished in 1817. Between 1825 and 1845, damages due to cracks repeatedly occurred, and the vault began to detach from the outer walls, attributed to the improper demolition of the monastery buildings and an overly heavy roof turret. Tie rods were inserted in the choir. A roof turret destroyed by fire in 1856 had to be replaced. Extensive renovations took place in 1936. In 1967, the roof was re-covered, and the roof turret was more stably integrated. Due to increasing structural problems and wall displacements of up to 24 cm in the following years, the foundations, which had settled over centuries, had to be renewed section by section in the 1970s, and the masonry stabilized by injecting cement grout.

The former monastery is situated in the city of Kaiserslautern, located in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany.

The former monastery church, today's St. Martin's Church, has been used as a Catholic parish church since 1803. Of the original monastery buildings, only traces of the cloister roof on the south side of the church are visible after their demolition in 1817.
