Prieuré de Grammont

The Priory of Grammont is a former priory of the Grandmontine Order, founded in the 12th century by Richard the Lionheart, located in Chassay in the commune of Saint-Prouant in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region. It is one of the best-preserved and most complete priories of this order in France (only the cloister is missing). It is owned by the Vendée department, is open to visitors, and has been listed as a supplementary historical monument since 1987.
History+
For a long time, the founding date of the priory was attributed to a charter of Richard the Lionheart from 1194, but in reality, it probably dates a little later. The construction of the buildings took place around the year 1200. The very uniform complex is remarkably well preserved. Already in 1292, the community counted only five friars. On September 11, 1629, a charter recorded the possessions of the abbeys of Déols, Saint-Gildas, and the Priory of Grammont, which were annexed to the domain of the Duchy of Châteauroux. The vault of the chapel was replaced by the current roof truss in the 17th century. In 1772, the Grandmontine Order was dissolved by the Commission for Regular Canons. The buildings were converted into a farm until they were purchased by the commune in 1985.
