Prieuré de Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin

he Prieuré de Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin is a former priory located at 4 Rue du Prieuré in the centre of Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin, in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France.

It was founded around 1050 as a dependency of the powerful Abbey of Maillezais. Local tradition sometimes attributes the foundation to Melusine (Mélusine), linked to the lords of Talmont. The associated parish church of the Sainte-Trinité, completed around 1158, originally served as the priory chapel. The medieval complex suffered destruction and damage over the centuries (one tradition mentions an attack in 1232).

In the mid-16th century (around the 1540s, or according to some sources 1523–1526), Geoffroy d’Estissac, Bishop of Maillezais — a wealthy, learned prelate and patron of the arts (François Rabelais served as his secretary) — had the prioral residence (logis prieural) rebuilt in Renaissance style. This is the principal surviving building. It displays the bishop’s coat of arms and characteristic perspective windows. The large monumental fireplace was later removed and reinstalled in the Château de la Pélissonnière at Le Boupère. The priory was damaged again during the Wars of Religion (notably in 1562 and 1567).

After the French Revolution the church and priory were separated, and the prioral buildings became a private dwelling. The Renaissance façade was inscribed as a Monument historique on 2 July 1997.

Between approximately 2020 and 2022 the complex underwent a major rehabilitation led by the Département de la Vendée and the municipality (architects ACS – Architectures Chabenès et Scott). The restored prioral buildings now house a municipal library/médiathèque, the Café du Prieuré, social housing units and related community facilities. The project received a departmental architecture award for its sensitive urban renewal in the village centre.
