Prinz-Emil-Castle

Between 1775 and 1778, Friedrich Karl von Moser, then First Minister to Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt, had the small palace built within an English garden that had already been laid out in 1772. The plans were by Johann Martin Schuhknecht, while Nikolaus Andreas Siebert designed the garden. Following Moser's downfall in 1779/1780, Hereditary Prince Ludwig X acquired the property. It received its current name from Prince Emil of Hesse and by Rhine, who took ownership in 1830. In 1927, the palace became the property of the city of Darmstadt. During World War II, it was severely damaged by bombs in 1944 but underwent extensive renovation by 1950.
