Prinzenpalais zu Schleswig
The State Archive of Schleswig-Holstein is the state archive of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Its seat is Schleswig. It is currently located in the building of the historic Prinzenpalais.
The building of the State Archive was erected around 1700 for the Privy Councillor von Buchwaldt. Previously, the princely administrative building stood on this site. Mrs. von Buchwaldt sold the property to the Gottorf court marshal Georg Heinrich von Görtz, who gave the house its structure that still exists today by adding the two side wings to the central building. It is a three-winged baroque manor house with a classicist facade from a later period, which is now referred to in Schleswig as the Prinzenpalais, after one of its former owners, Prince Friedrich Emil August from the Augustenburg line of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg.
Archival Records+
The archival material includes records from the pre-Prussian era (until 1867) concerning all of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the three duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg, and the Principality of Lübeck, and the districts, provided that the archival material did not go to the National Archives in Copenhagen. Also from this period are the documents and files of the Schleswig-Holstein estates and monasteries. The archival material of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, however, is located in the Archive of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck as its former state archive.
From the period from 1867 to National Socialism, the State Archive manages archival material from the Lübeck region (until 1937), as well as the Prussian administration of the Province of Schleswig-Holstein (until 1946).
Archival holdings of the Schleswig-Holstein judicial authorities exist from the period after 1867. Also, archival records from the Schleswig-Holstein branches of the Imperial and Federal administration (including postal, railway, and weather services) from 1871 are managed.
From the period of National Socialism and the occupation (1933–1949), there is a department for denazification. Four further departments (including those on the Gauleitung Schleswig-Holstein of the NSDAP or the Sub Area Intelligence Office of the British military government) are under construction (as of: 2012).
From the post-war period, the State Archive houses the files and documents of the state administration of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Archival records of the municipal territorial bodies are located in the various district and city archives.
Special archives of the State Archive exist for various non-state collection areas. These include collections of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History or the Schleswig-Holsteiner-Bund. In addition, the State Archive is also the film and map archive of Schleswig-Holstein.
Further individual holdings originate from various estates, including those of private individuals.

The archive has a regional scientific library with over 110,000 volumes, which are accessible in the reading room. This includes the holdings of the former library of the Schleswig Cathedral School, founded in 1307, which is the oldest grammar school in the federal state.
