Propstei Böhmischbruck

The Provostry of Böhmischbruck, a historic monastery, is located in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany, and is protected as a historical monument. It once served as a significant administrative unit for the possessions of St. Emmeram's Abbey in the northern Upper Palatinate, shaping the region for centuries.
History+
The origins of the provostry date back to 1251, when a hospital was founded in Böhmischbruck, providing care for travelers, the poor, and the sick. The site was transferred to the Regensburg Cathedral Chapter in 1256 and later to St. Emmeram's Abbey. In 1299, Bishop Konrad V of Regensburg exchanged Böhmischbruck for a mill with St. Emmeram's Abbey. Abbot Karl subsequently planned to establish a Benedictine monastic cell, with its income derived from surrounding monastic properties and the parish of Moosbach. The current parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt was consecrated in 1259 and elevated to a parish after 1299. The provostry managed extensive estates and held both low and high criminal jurisdiction. Throughout its history, the provostry was repeatedly attacked and plundered, particularly during the Hussite Wars in the 15th century, during which Benedictine monks were also murdered. A fire in 1552 destroyed the provostry, church, and rectory. Following the Counter-Reformation, the provostry returned to St. Emmeram's Abbey. As part of the secularization, the provostry was dissolved in 1803, and Böhmischbruck became a secular parish.
