Propstei Illschwang

Catholic rectory

The Illschwang Provostry was a historic Benedictine monastery in the Upper Palatinate, near Amberg-Sulzbach in Bavaria. As a former provostry of Reichenbach am Regen Monastery, it played a significant role in regional administration and jurisdiction.

History+

In the early 12th century, Margrave Diepold III and his mother Luitgard founded the Benedictine monastery of Reichenbach am Regen. Around 1120, the margrave endowed this new foundation with the village of Illschwang, including its church and scattered possessions. Further estates and the privilege of free Vogt election followed in 1135. The Illschwang Provostry itself, where a provost was appointed as a secular administrator and judge, is first documented in 1402. For centuries, the provostry was a subject of dispute between the territorial rulers of Amberg and Sulzbach. The Reformation led to the first dissolution of Reichenbach Monastery and thus also of Illschwang Provostry. In 1627, the Catholic faith was reintroduced in the region, but after the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Illschwang became Protestant again. From 1653, simultaneum was established, where Catholics and Protestants shared the same church. In 1669, Reichenbach Monastery was reoccupied by Benedictines, who continued to appoint secular provosts in Illschwang. Later, their own conventuals took over these duties. The secularization of 1803 brought about the final dissolution of the provostry.
