Propstei St. Kunibert

The Provostry of St. Kunibert was established in the early Middle Ages as an administrative unit of the Cologne Archdiocese. In the 12th century, concurrently with the expansion of Cologne's Niederich suburb, the original St. Kunibert church underwent renovations and extensions. This period also saw significant growth in the collegiate church and the number of its canons, largely influenced by the second elevation of the relics of Saint Kunibert in 1168. From approximately 1195 to 1212, Theoderich served as the first known provost of St. Kunibert, later becoming Archbishop of Trier. He gifted the provostry to the canons of the collegiate church on the condition that it would also serve as accommodation for future Archbishops of Trier. In 1376, the provostry suffered damage from a city fire but was restored in the same year. Further reconstruction or restoration took place in 1508, with the provostry designed as a tall tower building crowned with battlements. In 1764, Provost Friedericus Ludovi de Scampar initiated additional construction work. During the secularization of 1802, the provostry as an organization was dissolved, and its properties were confiscated. After being owned by the Prussian treasury, the church board of St. Kunibert acquired the provostry in 1820, which served as a rectory until its demolition in 1905.

The Provostry of St. Kunibert was located in Cologne, a major city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The property immediately adjoined the collegiate church to the north and extended between Calhauser Gasse and Off dem Brand alley.

The Provostry of St. Kunibert no longer exists in its original form, having been demolished in 1905. However, the archways of the former enclosure of the property are still preserved. A keystone of one of these passages refers to the construction year 1508, while a relief with an inscription above a coat of arms indicates construction work by Provost Friedericus Ludovi de Scampar in 1764.
