Propstei Vorsfelde

The Provostry of Vorsfelde represents a significant historical sacred building in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Protected as a cultural monument, it bears witness to ecclesiastical and regional development. Originally founded as a monastery, it now functions as one of twelve sub-districts of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig.
History+
The origins of the Provostry of Vorsfelde date back to 1746, when an ecclesiastical superintendency was established in Vorsfelde. Previously, since the Middle Ages, the church patronage over Vorsfelde and the Vorsfelder Werder belonged to the noble family of Bartensleben, who resided at Wolfsburg Castle. St. Peter's Church served as their patronal church from 1475 and temporarily as their burial site. After the death of the last male representative, Gebhard Werner von Bartensleben, in 1742, the fief and thus the church patronage reverted to the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, leading to the formation of the Amt Vorsfelde. Duke Karl I of Braunschweig divided the Königslutter superintendency in 1746 and created the new inspection in Vorsfelde, which included several surrounding localities. One of the first measures was the expansion of St. Peter's Church between 1749 and 1751 to increase seating capacity.
Location+
The Provostry of Vorsfelde is situated in the city of Wolfsburg in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany. Its territory extends mainly across Lower Saxony and to a smaller extent across Saxony-Anhalt, including a historical exclave around Calvörde. It is located on the northeastern edge of the Braunschweig Regional Church.
On site+
Today, the Provostry of Vorsfelde serves as an administrative center for 16 church communities with approximately 20,000 members (as of 2023). The official seat is in Wolfsburg-Vorsfelde, opposite St. Peter's Church, in a new building constructed between 1798 and 1801 on the site of a dilapidated 17th-century rectory.
