Quintin Castle
Quintin Castle is an impressive castle in Northern Ireland, rising approximately four kilometers east of Portaferry. It is known as the only inhabited castle in the region that boasts a direct coastal location and a rich history ranging from medieval origins to modern use.
History+
The origins of Quintin Castle date back to 1184, when John de Courcy initiated its construction. In the 17th century, Sir James Montgomery acquired the estate and carried out extensive alterations. Later, the property passed to George Ross, who, however, did not inhabit the castle, leading to its gradual decay. A significant turning point came in the early 19th century when Elizabeth Calvert, a descendant of Ross, inherited the estate and began a comprehensive restoration in 1850. Since 1950, the castle has been owned by the Burgess family.
