Radolfzell Minster

Construction of the Radolfzell Minster began in 1436. No remnants of a presumed Romanesque predecessor building or the complex of Bishop Radolt of Verona have been preserved. The initial construction phase was completed in 1488, and the choir was consecrated. Between 1510 and 1516, the nave was raised. From 1550 to 1552, the side aisles were vaulted and adorned with Gothic paintings in 1554, which are still visible in the bay near the rear marketplace entrance. An epitaph of Knight Wolf von Homburg from 1567 is also located within the Minster. In 1713, the central nave received a Baroque barrel vault with lunettes. The Baroque high altar was replaced in 1897 by a Neo-Gothic altar by Josef Eberle, but the Baroque altarpiece depicting the “Nativity of Christ” by Joseph Glyckher remains. Other Baroque elements include the Rosary Altar by David Zürn from 1648 and the Hausherrenkapelle (Lord's Chapel) from around 1750. The current 82-meter-high tower, the tallest church tower on Lake Constance, took its present form in 1902/1903. The last comprehensive renovation took place from 1982 to 1998. To preserve the Minster, the Münsterbauverein Radolfzell was founded in 2008. Since 2009, the Minster has been illuminated at night by a lighting concept developed by French artist Roland Jéol.

The Radolfzell Minster is situated in the town of Radolfzell am Bodensee, within the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Today, the Minster serves as a parish church and is an active center of community life. It houses a crucifixion group by sculptor Hans Schenck dating from around 1622. The organ, created by Mönch Orgelbau in 1997, was expanded in 2023. The carillon consists of nine bells, cast in 1953 and 2014.
