Ratzeburg Cathedral is an example of Romanesque brick architecture in Northern Germany. It is situated on the highest point of Ratzeburg's old town island.

History+

The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid on August 11, 1154, with construction beginning after 1160 under Bishop Evermod. The edifice was endowed by Henry the Lion as the bishop's church for the Diocese of Ratzeburg. By around 1220, the church construction was completed with the south vestibule. In the late 13th century, the cloister and chapter house were added, followed by the Lauenburg Chapel in 1380. After the Reformation, the cathedral suffered looting when mercenaries under Vollrad von Mansfeld raided it in 1552.
