Abbey of Echternach

The monastery's foundation in the 7th century is attributed to the itinerant monk Willibrord, who received the land from Irmina of Oeren. It was the first Hiberno-Saxon monastery on the European mainland and gained great importance through its scriptorium, known for richly decorated manuscripts. In 751, Echternach became a royal abbey of the Carolingians. After a period of lay abbots from 847 to 973, the monastery experienced a new flourishing under Abbot Ravanger with the reintroduction of the Benedictine Rule. Following a fire in 1016, the new Romanesque abbey church was consecrated in 1031. The scriptorium thrived again in the 11th century, producing important works such as the Codex aureus Epternacensis. The abbey was plundered by French revolutionary troops in 1794 and auctioned off in 1797. After a partial collapse of the choir in the 19th century, the abbey church was restored in Neo-Romanesque style by 1868 and elevated to a papal Basilica minor in 1939. During World War II, parts of the church were severely damaged but were rebuilt by 1953, adhering to the Romanesque original, and reconsecrated.

The Imperial Abbey of Echternach is situated in the town of Echternach, within the Echternach district, Grevenmacher region, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It lies at an elevation of approximately 169 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the monastery today. Parts of the former monastic complex also house the Lycée classique d'Echternach with its boarding school.
