The Reppiner Castle Ruin, an artificial ruin, rises on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was deliberately designed as an unfinished castle complex.

History+

The history of Reppiner Castle does not begin in the Middle Ages, but in the early 20th century. In 1907, the complex was built, planned from the outset as an artificial ruin. Its Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic style, with battlements and loopholes, was intended to convey the impression of a historical fortification but never served military purposes. Its construction was commissioned by the Benevolent Society according to the plans of building director Gustav Hamann. Even before the castle was built, the Reppin peninsula was a popular excursion destination. Archaeological finds suggest that the area was already settled by Slavs and that a Slavic ring fort may have been located here.
