Residence Ansbach

Government of Central Franconia

The Ansbach Residence, once the seat of government for the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach, is a historical building in Bavaria. Located in the city of Ansbach, it now houses the government of Middle Franconia. Its architectural evolution from a medieval complex to a Baroque palace makes it an example of the building art of various epochs.

History+

The origins of the Residence date back to the Middle Ages. Between 1398 and 1400, Elector Frederick I of Brandenburg had a collegiate court outside the city walls converted into a moated castle, remnants of which can still be found in the northwest wing of the Residence. Under Margrave Georg Friedrich I, a Renaissance building was constructed between 1565 and 1575 by master builder Blasius Berwart.
