Idstein Royal Palace
The present-day castle, built in Renaissance style from 1614–1634 by Jost and Henrich Heer (Höer) for Count Ludwig († 1627) and his son Count Johann († 1677), incorporating older building fabric, stands on a rock massif between the two town streams that converge behind Idstein. The castle rock was probably already built upon in the 11th century.
A bridged rock breakthrough separates it from the old castle area from the 11th century; today, an important inner-city connecting road runs through the breakthrough.
During the reign of the last Idstein Prince Georg August Samuel von Nassau-Idstein (* 1665, † 1721), the building received its interior decoration under the direction of Maximilian von Welsch. The partially lost stucco ceilings were created by Carlo Maria Pozzi. At the main portal is a large alliance coat of arms of Count Johann and his wife (around 1635).
The castle (since 1946 Pestalozzischule Gymnasium) can be visited as part of guided tours.
