History+
The origins of Restormel Castle date back to around 1100, when it was initially constructed as a wooden structure. In the late 13th century, the complex underwent reconstruction in stone, commissioned by Edmund, Earl of Cornwall, who made it his residence. Although the castle played little military role, it twice served as a court for Edward, the Black Prince. Its only known military engagement occurred in 1644 during the English Civil War, when Royalist troops dislodged a Parliamentarian garrison. Thereafter, the castle began its decline into the ruin seen today.
