Church

The Catholic Parish Church of Heilig Kreuz, known as the Rheingauer Dom, shapes the townscape of Geisenheim in the Rheingau. Although it was never a bishop's seat, it owes its name to its size and regional significance.

History+

A Romanesque church was mentioned at this site as early as 1146. The current late Gothic building was largely constructed between 1510 and 1518. After the original Romanesque west towers had to be demolished in 1829 due to dilapidation, a Neo-Gothic reconstruction took place from 1834 to 1838 under the direction of Philipp Hoffmann, a master builder born in Geisenheim.
