Riberhus Castle

The origins of Riberhus date back to the 12th century, when King Niels had the castle built on what was then the Danish border. By 1127, the complex was sufficiently completed for King Niels to host his son Magnus's wedding there. For over two centuries, from the 12th to the 14th century, Riberhus served as a permanent residence for the itinerant Danish court. It became particularly well-known as the residence of Queen Dagmar, who was highly revered in the region and whose memory is honored today by a sculpture on the castle hill. After the 14th century, the castle lost its importance and began to decay. During the Thirty Years' War, Riberhus was occupied by Swedish troops and largely destroyed by continuous bombardment from opposing forces. From 1685, the ruins served as a quarry. It was not until the 1940s that the remaining parts of the castle complex were restored.

The Riberhus ruin is located in Ribe, a town in the Esbjerg Municipality in the Syddanmark (Southern Denmark) region, Denmark. The remains stand at an elevation of approximately 7 meters above sea level on the northwestern outskirts of Ribe.

Visitors can today explore the visible remains of the ruin. These include the prominent castle mound, the preserved ramparts and moats, and a few remaining wall fragments that bear witness to the former fortress.
