Rienecker Castle

The originally Rieneck castle, a manor owned by the territorial lords and usually enfeoffed, was destroyed in the German Peasants' War. Count Philipp III von Rieneck and his wife, Margarete von Erbach, rebuilt the manor in 1531. After the extinction of the Rieneck family in 1559, the manor reverted to the territorial lordship, at that time a condominium between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the County of Hanau-Münzenberg. After 1559, it passed into various hands. In 1612, Philipp Valentin Voit von Rieneck, Prince-Bishop of Bamberg from 1653 until his death in 1672, was born there. After the extinction of the line of Voit von Rieneck holding the fief with the youngest brother of the Prince-Bishop named Adam Dietrich (1639–1676), the heir Philipp Heinrich Voit von Rieneck (1654–1711) sold the estate in 1690. It finally reverted to Kurmainz upon the death of the acquirer Johann Franz Schnell in 1704 and the associated extinction of the "male fief". Further use by the widow was tolerated until her death in 1726.
