Rienecker Castle

From the Middle Ages to the 19th Century

In 1525, the Rieneck Manor House, an estate owned by the regional lords and usually leased, was destroyed during the German Peasants' War. Count Philipp III of Rieneck and his wife, Margarete von Erbach, rebuilt the estate in 1531. Their marital coat of arms still bears witness to this on the building today. In 1559, the Counts of Rieneck died out, and the estate fell to the regional lordship, at that time a condominium between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the County of Hanau-Münzenberg. In 1731, the Rieneck Manor House was rebuilt again and in 1744 leased to the Lords of Erthal. After their extinction in 1805, the property passed to the Lords of Dalberg. In 1929, the political municipality of Rodenbach was able to purchase the estate. The Rieneck Manor House is the setting for a story by Maupassant.
