In the village of Castle Rising in the English county of Norfolk stands the ruin of Rising Castle. This site, built around 1138, is known for its well-preserved square keep, surrounded by a defensive earthwork, and is considered one of the structures of its kind from the 12th century.

History+

The castle was constructed around 1138 by William d'Aubigny, the 1st Earl of Arundel, who also owned Arundel Castle. During the Anarchy, it served as a mint for King Stephen. Between 1330 and 1358, Rising Castle was the residence of the former Queen Isabella of France, who died here.
