Broich Manor (Anrath)

After a sale in 1865, the estate was uninhabited and visibly deteriorated; in a fire, the outer bailey was largely destroyed.

In 1895, the estate was sold to a Cologne manufacturer, who had the manor house demolished and erected the small castle known today as Haus Broich in its place in 1898.

The farm buildings were also rebuilt as a four-sided farmstead around the turn of the century. The farm is now owned by former show jumping world champion Norbert Koof and has been one of two locations for the NRW State Police Mounted Unit since 2006.

The manor house remained undamaged in the Second World War, apart from the destruction of the upper part of the large tower.

In 1946, at the suggestion of the then Aachen Bishop Johannes Joseph van der Velden, sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Elisabeth came to Haus Broich to establish a retreat for religiously oriented groups such as scouts or altar servers. Shortly thereafter, however, a group of refugees from a children's home in Waldenburg, Silesia, also run by sisters, was taken in, and the facility continued as a children's home. From 1956 to 1976, a boarding school for special needs education for language promotion of immigrant children was simultaneously housed there. The children's home existed until 1986, after which the building was temporarily used by residents of a Krefeld nursing home whose building was being renovated.

From 1980-1981, the gatehouse was repaired. In 1994, the building was completely renovated, and from 1995 to 2006, Haus Broich was used by the order as a spiritual center.

In September 2007, the listed manor house was sold to XCOM AG and has housed the business premises of XCOM subsidiary biw Bank für Investments und Wertpapiere AG since May 2008.
