Bug Manor

The origins of Rittergut Bug stretch far back, with evidence of early fortified structures such as a motte-and-bailey castle on Bugberg hill and another in the village, likely dating from the 12th century or later. These served the clearing lords for protection and representation, possibly also to secure a medieval long-distance road. A stone keep was already mentioned in the village in 1502. In the early 14th century, the Lords of Sparneck appeared as owners, their manor comprising an estate farm and a mill. This original location was on the opposite side of the road from the current estate and was presumably destroyed during the Hussite Wars in 1430 or the Franconian War in 1523. At the end of the 16th century, the Rittergut was rebuilt using materials from the old structure and Uprode Castle and was later connected with a sheep farm. After the von Sparnecks, who repeatedly mortgaged the property, the von Tettau family inherited the estate in 1590. Other noble families such as the von Lindenfels and von Schönburg-Waldenburg followed.
