Eschenhof Manor

The Eschenhof is located in the Jülich district of Barmen, in the district of Düren. From the street, one can see the curved contour of the gable of the manor house. This is located at the upper end of the farmyard. A later extension added a lower, two-axis annex. The wrought-iron wall anchors on the gable show the year 1949. The almost completely destroyed farm was rebuilt. The reconstruction work was only completed in 1970-73 with the renovation of the street wing. In the new building, the architect Helmut Rademächers adopted the old height lines, but since the Eschenhof was now to be used as a residential and office building, many windows had to be broken into the formerly closed masonry.

The farm, located next to the church, belonged to the Barmen family for many years. Around 1500, the Duke of Jülich then granted it to Hans von Adelepsen. After that, the knight's seat changed owners several times through marriage or inheritance until Johann Arnold von Leerodt sold the farm to the doctor of law Johann Michael Dejes. He held the office of a Schultheiß and was an alderman at the court in Jülich. After his death, his successor in office received the Eschenhof. His daughter also married a Schultheiß named Johann Wilhelm Custodis. After that, from 1900 to 1915 alone, 5 different owners of the farm can be traced. In 1915, the estate received its name "Eschenhof" from Lothar von Hoensbroich.
