Groß-Vahlberg Manor

In 1776, Albrecht Egmond Georg von Münchhausen from Hessisch Oldendorf, a Privy Councillor to the Duke of Brunswick, purchased the feudal estate, as reported by Rembert Freiherr von Münchhausen, a direct descendant of that Privy Councillor. He is also related to the legendary Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von Münchhausen (1720–1797). This Baron, who served as a Brunswick officer, is famously associated with the imaginative tall tales that gained worldwide literary fame as "The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen." There was also the lyric poet Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen (died 1945) and a number of personalities from this family at the former Brunswick court. The Münchhausen family from the white line still inhabits the manor house, which has shaped the development of the small village. However, as in all agriculturally oriented villages, this connection has steadily declined. Besides the estate, there are five working farms – after the Second World War, there were still twelve.
