Großjena Manor

The origins of Rittergut Großjena date back to 1548, when an outwork of the Naumburg Georgenkloster was established on this site, possibly evolving from an earlier castle of the Ekkehardiner. The property was transformed into a fortified moated castle. After its destruction by Napoleonic troops in October 1813, during their retreat following the Battle of Leipzig, the foundations were used for the construction of a new neoclassical manor house in 1818. Owners included the Saxon Chief Forester Hans von Wiltperg, Naumburg Mayor Sixtus Braun, the Saxon-Weissenfels court jeweler Johann Gottfried Hoffmann, and the Royal Saxon Privy Cabinet and War Minister Georg Wilhelm von Hopfgarten. Later owners included the Prussian Chamber Councillor Christoph Wilhelm Loss and District Administrator Hermann Jacobi von Wangelin.
