Heven Manor

Haus Heven is a former manor house on the banks of the Oelbach in the Querenburg district of Bochum. It is located on Gerlach-von-Heven-Weg and is now used as a privately run farm.

In the 11th century, belonging to the Abbey of Werden, the then large farm was first mentioned in the monastery's urbarium as "suyta Hevinne". Later, it was granted as a fief by the Werden abbots to noble vassals. The enfeoffed at the beginning of the 14th century was Henrici de Lutzelowe, a member of the von Lüttelnau family, whose ancestral seat was a manor house in today's Kettwig district of Essen, still commemorated by the Essen Kattenturm. After the nearby village, the knights later also called themselves "von der Hevene" and expanded the farm into a moated castle.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the estate came into the possession of the Lords von Vaerst (also called "von dem Vorste"), whose possessions also included the Kallenberg manor near Kirchende. After the Knights von Vishusen temporarily resided on the estate, it first passed to the "vom Holte" and from 1527 to the Knights von Elverfeld, who held the fief until 1627. In 1629, a member of the von Vaerst family was again enfeoffed with it: Conrad von Vaerst zum Callenberg. His descendant, Baron Ludolf Bernhard von Vaerst, sold Haus Heven on March 25, 1747, for 46,800 Reichstalers to Wilhelm Ludolf von Boenen zu Berge.

After briefly being in the possession of the Barons von der Recke, it came to the Counts von Westerholt-Gysenberg through members of the von Boenen family.

A list of the appurtenances belonging to the estate from 1816 describes the residential building of the property as a building that was "moderately constructed" and "could hardly remind one of the old knight's seat anymore." The moat surrounding the estate buildings was completely silted up at that time.
