Heven Manor

The origins of Haus Heven date back to the 11th century when it belonged to Werden Abbey and was first mentioned as “suyta Hevinne” in the monastic urbars. The abbots of Werden later granted the estate as a fief to noble ministeriales. In the early 14th century, Henrici de Lutzelowe, a member of the von Lüttelnau family, was the feoffee. This family, whose ancestral seat was in what is now Essen-Kettwig, later called themselves “von der Hevene” and expanded the estate into a moated castle. In the early 15th century, the property passed to the Lords of Vaerst, who also owned Rittergut Kallenberg. After a brief period under the Knights of Vishusen and the “vom Holte,” it came into the possession of the Knights of Elverfeld in 1527, who held the fief until 1627.
