Laar Manor

The first mention of Gut Laar dates back to 1227, when it was owned by the Counts of Bentheim. In that year, the castle was conquered by Rudolf van Coevorden, who further expanded it before it was completely destroyed shortly thereafter by the Bishop of Utrecht. Following its destruction, the estate was enfeoffed to Eilhard von Bentheim, whose descendants adopted the name “van den Lare”. The fief remained with this family until 1380. Subsequently, the estate passed to Engelbert von Salne, who was married to Jutta von Laar. He had the estate fortified again and levied tolls on the Vechte, which led to conflicts.
