Niederbarkhausen Manor (Asemissen)

The first documented mention of the Barkhausen estate dates back to May 25, 1036. In that year, Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn transferred tithes from the Barkhausen manor, which belonged to the episcopal mensa, to the Busdorf Canonry. This manor, with five outworks, was one of the larger episcopal court associations. In 1840, the estate was elevated to a knight's manor. During the Revolution of 1848/49, approximately 1,000 day laborers and farm workers attacked the estate, abducting the owners and releasing them only after concessions. A two-story escape and defensive tower, presumably dating from the 14th century, was renovated around 1870 and raised by one floor. The manor house itself was built in 1608 and has undergone several alterations since then.
