Niederhaselbach Manor

The Knights' Estate with its manor house was used, among other things, as a prison. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed by the communists. The manor house was severely damaged by a fire in 2006.

Early History and Construction

The first documented mention of a fortified building on this site dates back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times, often through marriage or inheritance. The current manor house was built in the 18th century on the foundations of an older castle. It served as the residence for various noble families and was continuously expanded and renovated.

Usage as a Prison

During the 19th century, parts of the manor house were converted and used as a district prison. This period left its mark on the building's structure and history. Many local stories and legends are associated with this time, telling of prisoners and their fates within these walls.

Expropriation and Post-War Period

After World War II, in 1945, the then owners were forcibly expropriated by the communist regime. The manor house and the associated lands became state property. During the GDR era, the building served various purposes, including as a school and residential building. Due to a lack of maintenance, the building's condition deteriorated significantly over the decades.

The Fire of 2006 and Reconstruction

In 2006, a devastating fire severely damaged the manor house. Large parts of the roof structure and the upper floors were destroyed. After the fire, extensive discussions began about the future of the historic building. Thanks to private initiatives and public funding, a comprehensive reconstruction project was launched. The goal was to restore the manor house to its original splendor and give it a new purpose.

Today, the extensively renovated manor house serves as a cultural and event center. It houses a museum that documents the history of the estate and the region. Regular exhibitions, concerts, and readings take place in its historic rooms. Parts of the building are also used as a hotel, offering visitors the opportunity to stay in a historically significant ambiance. The surrounding park has also been restored and is open to the public.

The manor house is an impressive example of Baroque architecture, although it also incorporates elements from earlier construction periods. The facade is characterized by elegant stucco work and symmetrical window arrangements. Inside, some rooms still feature original ceiling paintings and wall paneling. The grand staircase in the main hall is particularly noteworthy. The reconstruction after the fire paid great attention to preserving these historical details while integrating modern infrastructure.
