Overdyck Manor

The House Overdyk in the Hamme district of Bochum was an old knight's seat. It belonged to the Counts of der Recke-Volmarstein.
The manor house was located approximately at the intersection of Overdyker Str./Am Hangenden, with some other buildings immediately to the west. These are said to have been demolished during the expansion of the B 1 expressway, which was later called Schlaegeter-Ring in this area. Today, the Ruhrschnellweg runs there. Why the manor house, which was located a few meters next to the construction project, was demolished is not mentioned.
Overdyck Rescue Institution+
The landowner and district administrator Count Adalbert von der Recke-Volmerstein established an orphanage on the estate in 1819. It was formerly also known as the Overdyck Rescue Institution. This building is still the main seat of the Protestant Children's and Youth Home Overdyck. The location is Bodelschwinghplatz 1 in Bochum-Hamme.
Ice Cellar+
In an outbuilding next to the manor house, there is an ice cellar six meters deep with the dimensions: length 39.70 m, width 6.50 m, height 3.50 m. The barrel vault was built around 1750, bricked up from the inside with quarry stone, and served the estate as a warehouse for food. The nearby Marbach was dammed for ice production.
Count Adalbert von der Recke-Volmerstein established the Gräfliche Overdycksche Brewery there in 1839. Later, the Count sought a Bavarian brewmaster. Thus, Johann Joachim Schlegel from Bergtheim in Franconia began producing a bottom-fermented beer in Bochum in 1850. Schlegel founded the Schlegel Brewery in Bochum in 1854.
Karl Gotthard von der Recke was district administrator of the Bochum district and lord of Overdyk. Count Adalbert went to Düsselthal around 1820 and to Craschnitz, Silesia, around 1848, where he founded and managed charitable institutions.
