Steinhaus Manor
Steinhaus is a district in the Bockenberg area of Bergisch Gladbach in the Königsforst. The Steinhaus forester's lodge is part of the farmstead. Occasionally, the name Groß Steinhaus is also heard.
Originally, the medieval settlement was a knightly fiefdom. At the beginning of the 15th century, it fell to the Cologne collegiate church of St. Severin. However, it was not entirely detached from the old feudal relationship, although the estate had passed into the farm association of the collegiate church. Due to its significant land ownership, the Steinhaus estate held a prominent position within the St. Severin farm association. In the 18th century, the property passed to the Augustinian nuns of Cologne, who founded a monastery here and erected a monastery chapel dedicated to St. John Nepomuk. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the monastery in Gut Steinhaus was dissolved and subsequently nationalized. In 1824, the chapel was demolished. Since then, the former farm buildings have been used as a forester's lodge. Since 1827, the original cadastre has listed the farm under the name Groß Steinhaus south of the country road from Bensberg to Altenbrück/Aggerstraße. The manor house was built of stone. This indicates that, in contrast to a half-timbered house, it had special significance and that this dwelling was owned by a noble landlord in the Middle Ages.
Current Use+
Until 2003, the farm was used as a forester's lodge. It was the official residence of the responsible district forester. As part of Regionale 2010, Steinhaus was developed into an information portal for the state enterprise Wald und Holz NRW and opened in June 2011. Here, it is explained how the Königsforst serves people as a supplier of many natural resources, such as oxygen, water, wood, etc.
