Theisewitz Manor

The village of Tyzawitz is first mentioned in a document in 1288. The origin of the name is linked to the Slavic word for yew (cf. Tisova), and the round settlement shape also suggests a Slavic origin.

In the 14th century, the von Thusewitz family, vassals of the Bishopric of Meißen, are known as owners. In 1305, a Heinrich von Thusewitz was the owner of the village. In 1398, a Jan von Theisewitz signed a document to donate the neighboring Brösgen to the Altzella monastery for the Burgrave of Dohna. He also sided with Jeschke von Dohna in the Dohna Feud and opposed the Margrave of Meißen. At the end of this conflict, the village of Theisewitz (1399–1401) perished; the noble family of Theisewitz disappeared.

In 1455, an estate as a Vorwerk (outlying farm) and an inn, the "Zum schönen Otto" guesthouse, which existed until the 1990s, are again mentioned in documents. From 1606, a knight's estate is mentioned, which held the manorial rights until at least 1764. In 1794, this was an official manorial court with a brewery and distillery. In 1904, the current manor house was built on the walls of a predecessor building. In 1923, the manor, located at the elevated southern end of the village, became an fruit estate. At that time, fruit plantations had been laid out on 80 hectares of arable land in the vicinity of Theisewitz. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

In 1995, Klinik Bavaria bought the manor and it became the seat of the Helene Maier Foundation (endowment of 1 million D-Mark). For therapeutic purposes, the estate engages in arable farming, fruit growing, beekeeping, animal husbandry, and crafts.
